All right, maybe Paul wasn't paying total attention to the traffic around him; the weather was damp and grey, and he was perhaps distracted by his thoughts. But the driver of the Mustang convertible was even less attentive, chatting away on her cell phone as she ran the stop sign on the street Paul's bike was about to cross. He, at least, saw her enter the intersection in time to hit his brakes; she didn't even slow down until she heard the thump of his bike hitting the side of her car.

In short order, Paul's bike crumpled slightly, and skidded onto the pavement; Paul bounced off the bike and landed on his back in the street, his helmet smacking the concrete with a cracking sound. He lay still, dazed and frightened, and heard the car screech to a belated halt. The driver quickly climbed out of the car and ran to Paul's side. "I'm a doctor," she said quickly, "and I'll get help here right away. In the mean time, don't move at all, okay?" "Whatever you say," Paul responded softly. "I can't tell if I'm hurt or not."

"Don't try to find out," the driver/doctor/assailant told him, "if there's any damage to your vertebrae, you could paralyze yourself by moving." This news was neither particularly surprising nor particularly welcome, but Paul lay still, uncomfortable but glad to be alive. The doctor pulled her cell phone back out, and called for an ambulance.
