Small Town Hook-up

With five hundred miles of bad road and even worse coffee under my belt, I was ready to call it a day. I hate these work junkets, even more so now that management decided that the smaller centers would be serviced by a representative driving to them versus flying. A cost cutting maneuver of dubious merit, and the genius that came up with this scheme sure as hell wasn't privy to driving this route.

I pulled up to a decent looking motel just out of a sleepy little town off the secondary highway. The sign read ‘Shady Nook Resort' and I had to laugh. There wasn't a tree for fifty miles, and it sure wasn't what I would call a resort. I did notice a rather large stump just off the edge of the parking lot, so perhaps I was simply just a couple years late to actually catch the shade.

The room was neat, clean and had been recently painted; I could still smell a hint of turpentine in the air. Still, it wasn't bad for a mere blip on the map.

The first order of business was a good soak and with the last suitcase lugged into the room, I was stripped and ready for that welcoming tub.
