Dixie in Nineteen Forty Two. Part 1 By: Ole Reb The South was a place that was almost devoid of men in the middle of 1942, white men that is. The Second World War had seen an unprecedented number to men leave their wives and sweethearts to join the Armed Forces to repel the yellow horde that everyone was sure would attack the country soon. There was one group of men, however, that were not allowed to participate in the defence of their country, they were the black men who were now left on the land to do a tremendous amount of work for the women who had been left behind. Women who were left to take care of the land, get the crops in and do the myriad of chores that were part and parcel of farm life.

Our story is of a large farm in the Southern U.S. that was owned by an old man by the name of Sam Daville. Sam had three daughters and five sons, who were all grown, married and living elswhere. With the advent of WWII, all of his daughters, except Melanie, moved back home as their husbands went into the Military. Sam's sons as well, brought their wives home to the farm. This placed seven young and very pretty women between the ages of nineteen and thirty years old in old Sams care. Melanie had a farm about two miles away that her husband had purchased. Mel was the oldest and her children were aged ten for the boy and eight for the girl. There were nine other children that ranged in age from six months to six years old. Sam had arranged for a young black woman to basically take care of the children while the rest of his daughters and daughters-in-law worked the farm. ...
