CHAPTER TWO THE INITIATION

Dublin, Saturday 9 January 1892

Marie slowly woke from the first sound night's sleep that she had had in weeks. "This bed feels strange", she thought to herself, and then she realised why; it was warm and dry unlike the damp, cold, lumpen mattress that she had been used to in the dive that she had once called home.

She stretched and yawned and then lay there for a few minutes as the reality of the previous 24 hours sank in. Yesterday morning she had taken the biggest chance of her life, and the results so far suggested that she had made the right choice. She felt more desirable and sexual than she could ever have imagined and also freer than she had ever been.

Whether as the daughter of strict Donegal farming stock, or as the downtrodden wife of a drunken husband, when struggling to keep up appearances she had always felt constrained by the views of others. Now she felt free, rebellious and determined to experience as much of life as she could manage.
