Carol's dark blue Subaru lumbered up the mountain road, bumping over the frost heaves that rippled through the asphalt. It crossed her mind that Tracy's cabin was indeed remote. Carol didn't know Tracy that well. She was a well-to-do accountant and friend of Monica, Carol's best friend.

Carol, an assistant librarian at a small college, met Monica when she was working on a college research paper and needed some help at the library. The two women hit it off immediately. Unlike the mostly self-absorbed and spoiled young women who attended the college, Monica was different. Divorced and in her mid-thirties, she was attending college to gain some control and direction over her life. Monica was a pretty woman, with long, light brown hair, a ripe body and a happy, slightly romantic attitude towards life.

She contrasted starkly with Carol, a single woman, also in her thirties, who was thin, quiet and somewhat somber. But she responded quickly to Monica's friendly warmth and the two became fast friends. When Monica told Carol she was welcome to join her and Tracy at the cabin, Carol readily agreed, despite some misgivings. She had met Tracy only once, when the three had a drink at a bar. In size, Tracy resembled Carol, but her hair was cut quite short and her personality was the exact opposite, very independent and self-assured. She tended to dominate and had a slightly aggressive air that intimidated Carol somewhat.
