It was lunch break at his deposition, so Stuart decided to take his witness to lunch at his club. After all, it was across the street from opposing counsel's office, so they should have no trouble getting back in time for the afternoon session. And it was a good excuse to use the club, which Stuart frankly had trouble justifying sometimes.

The witness was getting hammered at the deposition, so Stuart was in less than a sunny mood. That changed abruptly when their waitress walked to their table, followed by a couple of obvious trainees. One of the trainees was a young black man, pleasant and chatty; the other, however, took Stuart's breath away. She was young, slim, blonde--with her fine hair in a ponytail--and with some of the palest eyes he had ever seen; Stuart couldn't tell if they were grey or green.

Almost involuntarily, Stuart smiled at her, expecting to be ignored. Instead, she flashed him one of the most dazzling smiles he could remember. It was the kind of look The Loving Spoonful sang about in "Younger Girl": "She was one of those girls who seem to come in the Spring, One look in her eyes and you forget everything." Stuart forgot everything except the lovely trainee.

Though his witness wanted to chat during lunch, Stuart's mind was elsewhere, as he struggled to keep the trainee in sight, and aimed a few more of his best smiles at her. Each time she responded with another dawn-announcing, universe-opening one of her own, making Stuart ...
