Lucy Martin grew up in a small town in Alabama. She was the daughter of a fundamentalist minister and his subserviant wife. They raised her in a very strict household. She also led a very sheltered life. Her parents home schooled her and she had little contact with people outside of her father's church.

Because of her upbringing, she never dated. Her father picked her husband. He was a young man who just graduated from the seminary and was assisting her father at his church.
