Part 2 of the story

The next ten days were pretty uneventful. Neha continued with her exams, swotting up for her subjects till late at night. I offered to help her with subjects other than maths as well, but she politely declined and I didn't press the issue. I also realised that apart from maths, she had no need for help and my proximity affected her studies rather than help, so I left her to do her studies. In the middle of the exam fever in the household, Dolly celebrated her 17th birthday. It was a pretty low key affair. No invitees, no big party, no expensive presents. I knew Bipin could ill afford any of those, as money was tight. I gave Dolly a T-Shirt, joking with her that I had to guess her size. She grinned, but there was no sign of embarrassment or bashfulness that such a remark would have evoked from Neha. What she seemed to want was some attention and asked for my help with her maths. She came to my room and acted real dumb, but I quickly figured out that she was a bright student that needed no real help, but I played along, half amused at her attempts at gaining attention as an individual in her own rights rather than just another member of the family.

After about 2 hours of this charade, I leaned back in my chair, smiled at her and asked her, "You are here just so that we can be alone together. Isn't it?"
