The Chaperone

I couldn't believe I was going to be a chaperone at a my high school's spring dance! I'd only graduated from the school 5 years earlier myself! I asked myself how the hell I ended up in this situation but I knew the answer all too well. My mother is a wonderful person, but she's what you might call "organizationally impaired". She volunteered to chaperone the dance on the same Saturday night as her wedding anniversary. Dad had dropped a bundle to buy non-refundable front row theater tickets for that night. My Mom didn't put two and two together until the Thursday before the dance. I got back to my apartment Thursday night to find a frantic message from my younger brother and two from my Mom waiting on my answering machine. By the end of my return call I had volunteered to drive 100 miles to my parents house and take over chaperone duty.

So there I was, dressed in my best "casual" suit waiting for my little brother to get ready for the dance.

"Come on, Scott! Hurry it up!" I yelled at the closed bathroom door.

"Jeez, give me a break!" Scott replied. "The dance doesn't start 'til 8. We've got plenty of time."
