Chapter 39

Heritage Retreat Ministries radio network grew to thirty-eight stations, covering fifteen states; the congregation had more than tripled in the past year, and Reverend James Earl Black was working on plans to build a new, larger church. The money was rolling in, making financing no problem, but trying to keep up with everything was getting out of hand, making it necessary to hire a secretary.

After interviewing nine applicants, Reverend Black hired Mrs. Edna Whittier. Both she and her husband had been members of the congregation for the past three years. She was thirty-eight, nice looking, with a good figure which she tried to hide with loose fitting clothes. She had been married for twenty years to Ed Whittier, and had twin girls, eighteen years old who would graduate from high school in three months and planning to attend SMU.

Ed Whitter was a financial consultant, but also quite handy with tools, doing a lot of work around the grounds in his free time, and came in contact with Reverend Black often during the six months since Edna started working. He not only stopped by the office to pick up his wife several times a week, but whenever James Earl called to ask him to repair something.
