I pulled my car into the parking space, turned off the engine, and watched raindrops trace down the windshield like skinny, transparent fingers. Ten minutes early. There was still a chance to turn back.

It was times like this when I considered becoming a drinker. Rumor has it that alcohol is good for courage and courage was what I needed, artificial or otherwise—courage to do the one thing I knew was overdue, and yet the very thing I doubted I could pull off. A glance at the dashboard clock told me time was running out. Somewhere between the moment I pulled up and now, five minutes had evaporated. I rummaged through my purse for my mobile phone, taking an extra couple of seconds to plug in the power supply. It took that long because my hands were trembling so badly. I knew the battery was fully charged, but I didn't want the connection dying halfway through the conversation.

I dialed the number. After a few mechanical clicks the connection was established and I heard the first ring.

"Answer the fucking phone," I mumbled.

"Good afternoon, Dr. Winslow's office."
