Hyatt Regency: Downtown Houston

The lobby of the hotel was a bustling mass of people moving in all directions. It was 5:30 pm and out of town visitors were arriving back at the hotel following all day meetings in various downtown businesses. Tourists were returning exhausted from sightseeing and shopping excursions. The lobby had everything you could imagine a visitor might need: restaurants, information booths, bars, quiet sitting areas for strangers to meet.

I was sitting there in the sunken "sitting room" in the middle of the lobby in a deep red wing-back chair. The area had formerly been for cigar smokers, but the laws had forced the smokers outside. The faint aroma of old cigars still permeated the fabric of the chair. I hoped it wouldn't overpower my perfume.

You came strolling out from the elevator bank wearing the outfit you had described that would help us to find each other. My red dress and shoes clashed with the deeper red of the chair, but served well to downplay the flush in my cheeks that had crept in since you arrived in the lobby.

As was the plan, I walked over to the information booth and asked for a map of the city, then walked over and handed it to you. When our eyes met, we both drew in deep breaths and then began to laugh nervously at ...
