David Jerome N'Baroo grew up in South Africa. He was one of the lucky black men who had been born in that part of the world. His father had begun as a houseboy for a wealthy British family who owned thousands of hectares of land in the crown colony as well as several factories and mills. For some reason, unknown to DJ, his father had risen in his job and had become head houseboy....then had finally been made the family Butler.

Mrs. Ashley-Smythe was always in constant need of his father's services and it was surprising how much time the butler spent in her bedroom....presumably reading to her, plumping her pillows and other 'butlerly' things. At the age of fourteen, DJ was sent to the Church of England school in Capetown. There it was discovered that the large, brawny lad was very bright. The batteries of tests, administered by the faculty, deemed that DJ should go on to become educated. This information ws promptly relayed to Mrs. Ashley-Smythe and she saw to it that DJ ...
