Marcia opened the door to her apartment and led me into an L shaped living room that looked like a retrospective of 1960's decor. There was a green shag carpet on the floor, Scandinavian sofa, coffee table and chairs with hard foam rubber cushions and oversized lamps on two simple side tables.

The apartment had sliding glass windows that extended from wall to wall behind the sofa and opened out onto a concrete balcony with wrought iron railings. A soft light filtered through the sheer, off white curtains over the doors. There was music playing on a stereo near the door.

She motioned to the sofa for me to sit down and offered to get us some drinks. She went around the L into a kitchen and made sounds of drink fixing. As I waded through the thick shag toward the sofa, I looked down the hallway and saw three doors. The door at the end of the hall was open, and I saw the legs arms and skin of a man and a woman in the throws of passion.

Marcia called out from the kitchen, "don't pay any attention to those two, they're at it all the time." I sat down on the sofa and Marcia brought the drinks. The bourbon was cold and sweet going down. I took it all down in one gulp.
