With great care, Michael guided his car through the crowded parking lot. As expected for any school function, the place was a madhouse. Buses and cars were scattered throughout the place, with kids and their parents darting around recklessly. He had already dropped off his wife and kids, all he wanted now was to get out of here. They'd be going on an extended field trip, an annual event for the school. Michael grumbled to himself, thinking that if this was an annual event, some bureaucratic fool would've figured out how to organize the drop off and pick up better. But, he figured, a few days alone was a few days alone, what with his wife chaperoning and all. He didn't envy her for that, dealing with his own kids was one thing, managing someone else's would be completely different. Eventually, he picked his way to the exit, and turned for home. What to do now, he wondered. Although this trip had been planned for quite some time, he had no idea what to do with himself first. No honey-do list this weekend, that was for certain. He could sit on the couch and watch baseball all weekend if he wanted to, maybe even go to the games himself. Then there was always fishing...Michael steered his car towards home, mulling over all the possibilities, then setting them aside. What to do tonight mattered most, and he figured he'd share in his good fortune. His good friend and next door neighbor should be available, and if he could tear him away for the night, maybe they'd go out to Hooters for a few drinks, or perhaps the new strip joint that had finally opened. That seemed like a good idea, and he settled into his seat as he made the final turns into his development. ...
