RED

Red was working late, again. Was he working so much because he had to? All this could wait couldn't it? Underneath it all, he knew the hotel ran fine without him there and he couldn't be there all the time anyway. So, why was he here again, so damned late? The future, morning wakeup and drive-to-work was just a few short hours away.

There was movement in the hotel, there always was, and yet he was locked-on to what he was doing. The distractions of the hotel - keeping him awake- and his fatigue - making him nod off - fought each other over the closing of his heavy-lidded eyes.

Still, the reports he was putting together would, Red hoped, prove to his satisfaction (and of course to all the owners, of which he was one) that he needed an assistant manager. The reasons were not limited to the late hours he was spending, to keep things on track. He needed to keep the myriad of his housekeeping, laundry and maintenance initiatives going. He just didn't have the time to devote to overseeing those efforts. Hell, those ideas were saving money! Surely a little help in oversight of all this would save even more?

Tonight, as was often his practice, he was working in the little office behind the front desk. This allowed him to be near the reservation computer and the daily written reports. Coincidentally, it also ...
