A RED HOT SAUNA

(This story takes place in Europe, in the middle of 2002)

My girlfriend Joyce and I are what you could call a succesfull couple. She's a stockbrocker, I'm a laywer, we have no kids, so we make quite a good living. Since our motto in life is: "the purpose of work is to earn enough money to have a lot of fun", holidays are a big thing for us. So, ever trying to find out new ways to spend our holidays, last summer we decided to try hiking in the French Alps. It was the sort of thing in which you walked (and climbed!) from hotel to hotel, with your luggage sent ahead by car. A friend of ours did the same thing the year before and his stories suggested tiring but fullfilling hikes during the days, and enough opportunities for "interesting" evenings. He suggested a lot, but he always does that (suggesting, I mean). Still, I was a little curious about these so-called interesting evenings, because although over the last couple of years Joyce and I had settled into a comfortable routine, I could remember times when my life, including my sex-life, had been more exiting. I had the distinct feeling we needed some spicing up. Perhaps, so I hoped, a few interesting encounters would do the trick.

But, as it turned out, no such luck: the tiring-walks part turned out to be accurate, but the interesting evenings we missed out on. Perhaps just bad luck, perhaps bad karma, but not a single co-traveller seemed ...
