I don't quite remember the time I initially met Steven, it just seems he has been around since the first day I moved here back in 1996. Steven doesn't seem to have a last name; if you mention Steven everyone knows whom you are speaking of. He is in his mid-twenties although the baby-face might make you think otherwise. His short-cropped brown hair and brown eyes accent a rather round, cherub-like face. He is biracial so therefore his skin assumes the color of Carmel. He has never worked, at least not at a regular job, but always seems to have money when he needs it. Actually that isn't exactly true; that's where this story picks up. It would seem Steven had run on financially hard times in recent months. He always had a knack for finding some woman, bitch, as he prefers, to keep him in threads and beer. He wasn't that attractive, but was definitely a con and usually got what he wanted. A couple of months ago he came knocking on my door pleading to borrow a few dollars until he got paid. "Paid from where?" I asked "Some buddies owe me some money, I'm good for it." He smiled that killer smile and I gave him a few bucks, probably thirty dollars. This happened several more times over the course of a month and a half until Steven had a tab of over one hundred fifty dollars. He would bring me twenty dollars one day and a few days later borrow another fifteen thus never paying off his debt completely. I did become suspicious of his activities when he was not around, but had better things to do than dwell on it. I had a good job and he seemed like a nice enough kid. I had all but forgotten about Steven, and the money, until one Saturday evening about a week ago. I came home from work, fixed dinner, and settled in with a glass of wine ...
