Liz was born and had been brought up in a remote township in Brazil where she had spent the whole of her young life until she came to the United Kingdom when her farther retired from his post as a missionary. She was almost eighteen at the time, innocent and naïve in the ways of the world, and was overwhelmed by the pace and excitement of life even in the relatively quiet London suburb where the family now lived.

Dazzled by so much that was new and different, she was quickly swept off her feet by a young man she was introduced to by her father. He was an accountant who worked for the local church dioceses and was her first boy friend. Perhaps because he had been born and bred in London and was a few years older than her, he seemed to Liz to be sophisticated and very different from the natives she had grown up with in their isolated community in the jungles of Brazil.
