It was supposed to be a romantic getaway. Just Sam and I, all alone, on a secluded beach in Mexico. Sam had just received a promotion and this was our celebratory vacation. We spent the better part of a month's pay to rent the beach house for a week.

When we landed at the airport, it seemed that it was going to be all for nothing. Our luggage was sent to some far off destination and we had to wait for two hours to get a rental car. Finally we were on our way. The drive was scenic. Everything was vibrant colors. Along the way we talked about our plans to relax for the week. Before the trip was over, we both felt giddy with excitement.

We pulled into the drive, and were surprised to have a young man waiting at the front door. Sam got out of the car first to find out if we were in the right place. Then he waved me over. I stepped out of the car and tried to arrange my now well traveled in outfit and straighten my wind blown hair.

"This is John, the guy that we are renting the place from. He stayed to show us around." My always-amicable husband had his arm around this stranger's shoulders. He was only an inch taller than Sam, but had darker hair and eyes. His body was that of a surfer, lean and trim. He wore a shirt that buttoned only at the naval. I tried to smile, but I'm sure that it appeared weary.
