It had been a long night, 3 homocides in 9 hours. My partner, another detective that is, and I had spent five hours with one suspect before finally getting a confession. It was after midnight, and the weather had turned nasty, rain mixed with sleet, making the roads next to impossible to manuever. I wanted nothing more than to crawl in my bed and fall asleep. But I had promised my best friend I would stop by his place at least for a little while.

I arrived at Alan's at twenty after 12, it had taken me almost 20 minutes to complete a two minute drive. I let out a sigh as I parked my car and let myself into the house. Alan and I had been friends for 15 years, since we were barely 13 and had once even tried to be lovers. We had quickly discovered that we were only meant to be friends and haven't parted since.

Alan and his partner Rob were stretched out on the couch, Alan holding Rob, who held their three month old son. I walked over and slipped my arms around Alan hugging him tightly. Alan returned the hug, his buff arms holding me close and my tension immediately eased.

Alan was just over 6'0 feet tall, more than three inches shorter than myself, but he outweighed me by at least twenty pounds of muscle. He was built like a football player, but his eyes gave away his secret, he was as gentle as a kitten, with the eyes to match. His dark brown hair was a mess, probably from laying with Rob and their baby not to long ...
