Living in a house with all different types of animals is a lot of work. It also requires great planning when trying to get out of town, even for a short weekend trip. Besides the four cats and three dogs, there are six horses, a bird, and even two frogs.

The holiday weekend was approaching and I hadn't decided what I was going to do. With three days off, there were plenty of options. My live-in girlfriend had decided to visit her family four hours away. I, of course, was invited and would have gone, but my family was planning a get-together three hours away in the opposite direction. Because of the animals, I even considered just staying at home to take care of them and getting the yard work out of the way I've been putting off. The pool needed to be opened for the summer, too. I compromised; I decided to attend my family's function, but I would only go for one night. I planned on leaving early Saturday morning and coming home early on Sunday. I would only need someone to feed the animals on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

I've used several different people to tend to the animals when I am away. All are capable, it was just a matter of seeing who was available on short notice. I knew I could get a hold of Carla at the veterinary ...
