As I opened the reunion invitation, my mind wandered back to my high school years. My experiences had not been all pleasant and the memories still had pain tied to them. My college days had been much more of a sweet memory. They were filled with memories of good friends and good times...a time of maturing and a feeling of acceptance that just hadn't existed within my small high school class. It seemed like it had all been a competition for popularity and acceptance...most of it shallow and hypocritical.

It wasn't that I hadn't been popular in high school...but there was something lacking. It somehow seemed hollow and lacked fulfillment. As I looked at the invitation, I wasn't sure that I wanted to go at all. I tossed the invitation in the basket and decided I wouldn't go. I had learned from real college friends that my high school buddies hadn't really been friends at all. I hadn't maintained contact with a single one. What was there to go back for anyway?

A few days later the phone rang. It was Nancy, the senior class president. She was contacting the entire class to personally ask each of them to attend the reunion. Somehow in the conversation, I had said yes, only to regret it the minute the phone call was over. Nancy had gone on and on about how everyone was going to be there. They were having a dinner dance cruise.

Even though it had been three months off, the day of the reunion arrived ...
