John was in charge of the community service workers at the library. Most were the routine drunks and desperate losers one would expect. But every once in a while there would be a worker who would activate certain thoughts in his mind.

Divorced, with no kids, John was particularly frustrated with his sex life. Sometimes this frustration leaked into his ideas about others. One of his targets became a young man by the name of Keith. He was 19, dark-haired, and good-looking. Most importantly, there was a desperation about Keith that John was unsure if it was real, or just a projection of his own frustration.

He had final confirmation when Keith called out two days in a row. When he showed up again, he was very apologetic. But it was not a big deal to John, as he explained, since it was Keith who had to finish his forty hours in two weeks.

"Yeah, I know," Keith said. It was tough, he said, with school and his part-time job to get everything done. Finally, he gave John a strange look and said, "If there was only some way I could come in extra and do... something extra, you know?"

"Something extra," John said.
