The restaurant was full! I had eight tables in my section and every damn one of them was full. The Chef took great joy in screaming at me in French every time I ran into the kitchen, breathless and harried, to pick up more dinners. I continued to give him the universal sign with one finger. I was new, slammed and losing it!

This was not your everyday restaurant where the kiddies could come with their parents and promptly begin destroying crackers. No, this was a four star, uppity and renowned dining "experience." I would present the wine and silently snicker at those who didn't have a clue as to what they were doing. My uniform was a white tux shirt, black pants, black shoes. Nothing sexy about that.

I had just finished serving a table of four their entrees when the manager grabbed my arm and insisted I take a table of one out of my section. From the steely look in her eyes I knew better than to say, "no!"

I rushed over to the table of one and without truly looking at the customer, I began my spiel on the nightly specials. I had my pad out and pen poised to take the order when I realized that my customer had not said a single word. I looked up from my cheat list of the culinary delights for the evening...and that is when my world changed forever. ...
