I had been working abroad for several years, in England and Scotland. I left my boyhood home in Missouri to go to college, then on to bigger and better things from there. Last year I had a good amount of vacation time to use up, and I decided to attend my fifteen-year high school reunion. I came home a few days early to visit family and adjust to the jet lag. It was early summer and the heat and humidity were like ocean waves drowning you beneath them.

While abroad I had acquired a slight English accent and a good deal more charm than I'd had when I'd left fifteen years earlier. In body and mind, I had matured robustly and I suspected that not many of my classmates would recognize me at first glance. I was looking forward to talking with my former peers at the reunion.

As I had hoped, most of my high school acquaintances had done well for themselves- most had spouses or families and were living comfortably and happily. The few that were not as fortunate helped themselves to the bar or tried to make contacts with the wealthier alumni.

I had been feeling expectant throughout the night, and when the evening ended, I felt let down. There had been something missing- or rather... someone.

It hit me in the middle of the night. Asleep in my childhood bed in my mother's house, I dreamt of a girl I once knew; the first I ever loved. ...
