The 1998 Merlot was still fresh and fruity and was certainly Beatrice's favorite so far, not one to really enjoy the dry wines, she had not enjoyed the Chardonnay nor the Cabernet Sauvignon -- although her husband Ronnie said it was one of the nicest 1995 he had ever tasted. The couple along with their friends were at their first tasting after their arrival in the Napa Valley an hour earlier following a drive up from Monterey. They were with their friend's Bob and Debbie. They had left around noon after getting the kid's situated at the neighbors and had arrived around 4:30pm. After checking into their rooms at a hotel in the quaint town of Napa, they headed out to try and catch the last tasting at a nearby winery. Having only one wine left to taste on the list of five wines, Bob suggested that they buy a number of wines they had not tasted yet and have their own tasting back at the Inn after dinner. So they bought six bottles, got some ice and a plastic bag to cool the whites and then headed for dinner.

Dinner was at a very California Wine Country type restaurant with an excellent selection of local wines to accompany dishes that featured fresh produce. The two couples totally relaxed over dinner which took almost two hours to finish and included two wonderful bottles of wine, a Riesling for the ladies both of who preferred the sweeter, fruitier wines and a unbelievable David Bruce Pinot for the guys. About 8:30 PM they headed back to the hotel.
