Part - Three

Sandcastles, the day was set aside for building sandcastles, or rather should I say one huge sandcastle. Ever since I had been coming to the beach with Teddy and Sandy one day had been set aside for building a sandcastle. What had started as a diversion for a toddler had blossomed into a major event, complete with concept plans, a list of tools to be packed, a bag of knights and flags, in short, a big deal. Everybody helped, but the job of architect and crew chief was mine. Teddy and Sam had already picked out where on the beach we would build this year's castle and started dragging all the buckets, trowels and shovels we used. I barely had time to grab some coffee before they were dragging me out the door.

Big sandcastles start with big piles of sand. I let the boys start the digging while I finished my coffee. Soon all three of us were digging and the outlines of this year's castle started to emerge. After several hours, the perimeter wall was roughed out, the location for the entry tower was set and most of the heavy digging was done. Sandy and Mary joined us sometime during the morning, bringing along cold lemonade and more hands for the work. By the time we took a break, I had sweated out all of last nights ‘ritas and stripped down to just my swim trunks.. The boys ran down to the water's edge and were soon splashing around.
