Chapter 5 - The Garden Party About a week after the Dance was the School Garden Party, not itself a grand affair but in a grand setting. The courtyard of Corran House is a beautiful Jacobean lawned enclosure. Susan and John, arm in arm, make their way from the big entrance gate towards the front door of the house. John is under strict instructions. Susan had made it quite clear to him that she knew what she was doing , that flirting with Nick (as she described it) was what she planned and it was designed just to make John jealous.

After all, she stated with conviction, their relationship was firmly based on her being in charge in the bedroom and this was a bedroom matter. He was told to be sensible and to trust her. John had looked deep into her eyes and trusting her utterly, knew that she was right.

The principle having been set and the apron strings tied firmly around his willing wrists, John agreed to go to the Garden Party. It sounded fun - champagne, strawberries, a chamber group from the School playing in the House. ‘We are going - it'll be fun. Strawpberries and shampoo ... yum.' John smiled at her childishness. ‘I'm going to wear my party frock and stuff and you, my darling...' Her voice darkened. ‘... are going to be my brother. They've never met my husband. They think he's away. ‘Cos you're sooo grumpy and stay-at-home.' She kissed him, childlike on the lips. Did you enjoy being made jealous last Saturday? ...
