Elaine stepped over the police line and started walking up to the rim of the newly formed crater. It had been seven days since the meteor had landed, and this place had since been the object of a lot of media attention. It was only now that she had finally managed to get past the guards so she could make her way up the pile of rubble created when this hunk of rock slammed into the earth.

It looked completely out of place in the middle of the inner city suburbs. As she walked she could see the mixture of concrete, soil and trees that had been thrown out by the impact. When she neared the rim she went down on hands on knees to make sure no one could see her profile against the night sky. She reached the rim and paused, "Wow," she said, only now realising just how big the hole was.

They had said it was as big as an oval, which was ironic considering that it had landed in the middle of her local oval. It was lucky too, because for all the blown out windows, and people injured by shrapnel, there was only one fatality: the poor bastard who happened to be mowing the grass as the time.

Elaine dusted her hands off on the back of her jeans as she walked down on the inside of the rim. It was darker in here; the moon was only a quarter full, and the dust from the impact was still obscuring most of the light from the city. It was also hot: the reason they had been stopping people from going in was because the place had been steaming ...
