Just before Highway 99, I had a stroke of luck. There was a Pilot station and truck stop. Pilot is a source of cheap gas. Pilot is also a source of the three national booklets with coupons for cheap motel rooms. Pilot has mechanics on duty 24/7. Pilot has fast food on site. Pilot has dozens of randy truck drivers on site at all times. I pulled into the driveway, suddenly thought about my state of undress, and I panicked. I was dressed like a hooker. Women who are in business for themselves often frequent truck stops.

I parked at the pump nearest to the store counter. No, that was too close -- everyone who went inside would walk right by me. I moved the car to the end pump. No, that was too far -- I'd have to walk by everyone closer. I was scared to get out of my car. I thought about waiting until dark, but that was a couple of hours away. I sat there for about five minutes. Finally, I pulled a twenty from my wallet, took a deep breath, got out of my car, and walked directly to the door. ...
