I cut west to Interstate 5, a road where it is easier to drive a little bit above the limit than on State Highway 99. I wanted to get through the Los Angeles basin before the afternoon rush. I figured I had to average eighty to get to the Grapevine in four hours. I drank my water, listened to my CDs, and kept up with traffic. At about the Los Banos off ramp, I had another nasty thought. I pulled my halter down, and drove the next two hours topless. At eighty MPH, I don't think anyone noticed. I was feeling pretty mellow, my anger at my husband dissipated.

There are some cheap gas stations a little north of the junction of the 5 and the 99. I pulled off the interstate, and drove into Jack-in-the-Box. Before I got to the microphone, I put my top back on. Without thinking about finances, I ordered a sourdough breakfast jack combo with a coke, and fries instead of the hash-gray potatoes.
