Christy was watching practice, hoping Joe would see her and ask her out tonight. He had left the night before with a kiss, but no discussion of when they would see each other again. She was haunted by his lovemaking, how good it had felt, how different from all her experience. She had asked him to take her to the Ball because her parents had bought the tickets, and never expected the evening to end as it did. She was one of the most popular girls in the senior class, and took for granted that anyone she favored with her attention would want more.

He was playing second base, moving gracefully around the field, clearly the best player out there. A couple of her friends had asked how her evening went, and she had fibbed about letting him go all the way with her. She was thoroughly confused.

As she watched, Jack Hatch sat down beside her. "Hey, Chris." "Jack." "How about a movie tonight." "Can I call you, Jack. My mom and dad may be coming home." Jack was a cute guy who had asked her out before, but he wasn't a jock. Christy tended to want dates with high potential to make other girls jealous. Maybe if Joe didn't come through, she would go out with him, just to see what it would be like.
