The churning water from the propeller began to settle as the ferry pulled from the Copenhagen dock for the four hour trip to Wilhelmshaven. Laden with cars, buses and trains the ferry made its way into the shipping lane and gathering speed, headed into open water. I watched from my perch against the railing of the top deck, as the harbour of Copenhagen disappeared into the distance. Goodbye Tivoli Gardens, goodbye Tuborg Beer, goodbye Little Mermaid. Without sadness, I turned my back on the city sinking below the horizon and stepped through the door to the main lounge of the top deck. A wave of bitterness swept over me as I surveyed the lounge for a friendly face but reflecting that on the midnight ferry to Wilhelmshaven the likelihood of finding a face with eyes open was at best remote. I made my way to the bar and ordered a coffee, for sleep held no interest for me and the pain of loss twisted my stomach and weighed heavily on my mind. The barman nodded and turned to pour my coffee and I closed my eyes against the pain. It was too much. I'd left her standing on the quay. I'd left her crying in the cool night air. For a long time, it had been apparent that I was an inconvenience to her in her travels. I was someone to carry her bags and to whom she could talk endlessly about her endless string of lovers.
