Cal Sampson leans up against the firmness of his favorite rock, letting the heat of the intense Iowa sun bake through his skin. In the distance he can hear the roar of his father's plow, a muted gurgle that sounds something like a revved-up motorcycle.

This is his favorite place, where he comes to get away. Here, no one can bother him, ask him to do things, or call him names like the kids at school. Here, he is king of his own fucking world, and that's just now he likes it. He doesn't have to worry about his stupid father remarrying to that frigid bitch from the post office, or about her dorky 10-year-old son, who is sure to follow him all over the place. This is where Cal comes to think about more important things, like his future and what he plans to do with his life once he finally blows this fucking town. And Zak King, the captain of the football team, who has been occupying quite a bit of Cal's thoughts these days.

Cal closes his eyes and gets as comfortable as possible, knowing that he'll probably pay for not bothering to apply any sunscreen before removing his shirt. He doesn't care. He thinks about Zak instead, of ...
