I was feeling more than a little bit anxious as Babs and I headed over to Jean and Bill's for dinner. This whole friendship had developed at such a dazzling pace. While I had been honest to Babs up to a point and faithful in my own mind, there were things that had not been said about Jean and me.

Both Jean and Bill met us at the door dressed much the same as we were. I, of course, had not thought to even ask how to dress, but Babs and Jean had decided everything during their short visit with each other earlier in the day. So we were all basically dressed in southern summer casual which is shorts, knit shirts, and casual loafers, except for Jean who had on one of those wrap-around denim skirts in place of shorts. I have never been the kissy-huggy kind and usually just nod or shake hands with the female half of the couples with whom we are friends. So after shaking Bill's hand and exchanging pleasantries, Babs raised an eyebrow when Jean gave me a big friendly hug and a kiss on the cheek saying, "My hero."
