Chuck Drake's voice awakens me from my reverie, the candid reference to my state of luck or something similar being obvious. Forced to look up reluctantly from my half-finished drink, one I had been nursing for the better part of the last hour, I blink myself back alive. Still, the annoying nasal whine,though not capable of garnering my total attention, drags me reluctantly closer to the here and now. Chuck,in his own often insipid fashion, usually finds something worth pointing out in almost any situation.

Shining out of the surrounding darkness above, the cherubic face of my best friend is smiling down at me. I scowl back involuntarily at the offending visage. I am in no mood for the distraction, but I manage to grin back anyway. From between all the freckles and a ruffled mop of red hair, Chuck's eyes twinkle, and when Chuck's eyes twinkle you just know he is up to no good. I guess I must look confused enough for him to resume his interrogation. He seems to enjoy his forays into analyzing my life way too much, and right now he has me at a definite disadvantage. I kinda know where he is angling, but I give him my best fake puzzled expression to bug him for his trouble. ...
