I'd been out of school for a few weeks and just celebrated my big 18th birthday. No plans, nothing to do but enjoy the summer. But, boy, was I already getting bored!

Most of the other kids I hung out with in high school were away on vacation with their folks or working to save up money for college. Not me: I decided that this summer would be a lazy one, but I never thought that having nothing to do would be so dull!

I spent my days sleeping until noon, my afternoons driving around in my '69 VW, and my nights were usually spent sitting around at home playing records. Ho-hum....One day seemed like the next, and I really needed a change of some sort.

I guess that having nothing to do and nobody to hang out with was kind of my own fault. After all, not all of the kids were away for the summer---I just didn't have all that many friends, I guess. And as for girls, well, I just never felt very interested in dating. Sure, some of the girls at school were nice, but like I said, I just wasn't comfortable chasing after them like the other guys. Even so, I was still "one of the guys" and never got grief for my lack of interest in the opposite sex. Heck, they even nicknamed me "The Bachelor", a title I accepted as one of respect more than one meant to taunt me for my female-free way of life!
