There's a certain glamour associated with traveling overseas, and as this was my first trip abroad for business, my expectations had been high as I boarded the plan in Boston bound for Milan, Italy.

By the time the week was half over, the reality of business travel was hitting me hard. Even before I arrived in Milan, the flight and boarding delays had me irritable and drained. The hotel, although pleasant, wasn't at all as nice as I was used to in the States. I was seeing little if anything of the culture and city since I spent from sunrise to sunset in a tiny spare office at our Milan division crunching numbers. In the evening I had just enough energy to order room service and eat before trying to sleep on a lumpy bed while suffering from jet lag.

I was able to complete everything I needed to by the end of the day Wednesday, and with the blessing of my boss back home, I made plans to take Thursday off and spend some time touring the city.

The day dawned grey with the skies sprinkling rain, just enough to make it damp, cool and gloomy, nevertheless I was determined to enjoy a tour of some of the sites and headed out. I spent the early part of the day wandering parts of the city, enjoying people watching and trying various foods. After lunch I joined an afternoon bus tour which was to stop at the cathedral, art museum and several other spots.
