"You always told me I could ask you about anything," Extra said, her eyes downcast with shy reluctance.

"Sure." I replied.

Does her name seem a little odd? She got the name because her mother thought of her as something extra that life had given her. A wonderful something extra she always said. Extra was my stepdaughter by proxy.

Her mother, Janna, and I had lived together for almost six years. Jana was killed by a drink driver. Extra stayed on with me. Her father had taken off right after she was born. The court couldn't locate him. They didn't even know if he was alive. That left Extra with no other family. She was fourteen then and old enough, according to the court, to be her own guardian. If I offered her a home and if she wanted to accept they didn't have a problem with it.

The first year getting over Janna's death was tough on both of us. It strengthened a bond that was already there and we developed a relationship that wasn't stepparent and child and wasn't exactly friends.
