House for Rent

About twenty years ago, my neighbor was temporarily transferred to Seattle Washington. It was on such short notice that he did not have time to sell or rent his house, so he asked if I would list it for him. I did and within a week, I had it rented. Three months later, the renter was laid off and moved out in the middle of the night; it was two days later before I knew he had left. Before I had a chance to clean it up and put it on the rental market again, the owner was told his transfer was permanent. I ended up buying the house for the rental income, and in the next several years, I was able to purchase six more houses in a two-block area. The rental income was great, far exceeding my salary, but at the age of 45, I was not ready to quit my job and play golf all day.

In the nearly twenty years of renting, I have rented to all types of people. Some kept their premises immaculate, while others were just plain slobs. A few drunks, a couple of wife beaters, and a number of dead beats. Now and then, you get lucky and rent to real jewel. This was the case, a few years back.

It was a Friday evening and I got a call from my daughter-in-law, wanting to know if I had a vacancy. Her younger sister was having difficulties at home. Their mother did not approve of Tanya's boyfriend, her clothes, her other friends, and most everything else, ...
