Leandrith walked through the castle gate, drawing Falnrath's cloak tightly around her so it covered her breasts. She was surprised that there were no guards at the gate. She entered the grounds and saw that the normally well-ordered grounds were in disarray.

Panicked, she ran into the castle. She was greeted by the bodies of several of the servants. Leandrith knelt by the lifeless form of her favorite maid. Tears filled the lady's eyes as she found the young woman cold and stiff. The raid had clearly occurred several days earlier.

Lady Leandrith searched the castle and found many more bodies. She did not, however, find the body of her mother. Her father and his soldiers must have been in the field looking for her and her brother. The remaining guard had not been strong enough to stop the raid.

Leandrith ran back to the forest. Falnrath had not moved far away. Reading Leandrith's face, he saw there had been great loss. "My Love, what has made your face take such a countenance?" Tears fell from her eyes as she ran into his waiting arms. Leandrith cried into Falnrath's shoulder.

When she was cried out, she told Falnrath what had happened. They walked back to the castle. As Leandrith put on a new dress, Falnrath examined the battle scene. He was disturbed by what he saw. The raid ...
