Melissa was finally on her way to college. She had been planning and dreaming about this day for years. It hadn't been easy to convince her folks to let her drive cross country by herself. Her mother was afraid she‘d get lost and her father was afraid of the perverts that hunt young girls be themselves. Nevertheless in the end they agreed.

Of course her father had insisted on having her car completely serviced and new tires installed. Melissa had protested that her car was fine, but secretly she was glad her dad had prevailed.

Another suggestion that her father had made that she had come to appreciate was that she should follow the old highway system instead of the sterile environment of the interstates. It was taking her longer to get to California, but back roads had given her a sense of America and its history that she had fallen in love with during the trip.

She had been on the road for several days and had settled into a routine. When she got up she would put her suitcase back in the trunk, go to a local eatery and have a light breakfast. Afterwards she would gas up her car and after consulting her itinerary head out for the day's drive.

Now it was late in the evening and Melissa was looking forward to finding a hotel and getting something to eat.
