Sometimes a story doesn't have a happy ending. Sometimes there is no happy beginning. Sometimes the middle is what is bright, glowing and glorious. Sometimes, just existing is all that ever is. And that is always as it needs to be.

He jolted awake and into fuzzy consciousness due to a bewildering array of pain through out his body. Stephan was having a hard time focusing his eyes or his mind. The jeep lay on its side and he knew that he would not last the night. The road was unpaved and far out into No Man's Land, no where near another soul for too many miles to warrant thought.

It would take time before he was missed by his fellow WHO colleagues at his original destination. His life had centered on the World Health Organization from the moment he received his doctorate in epidemiology. His own life was of no importance to himself other than how he could help others. He didn't party or socialize or even hold a significant conversation with another person that was not related to his work. To the point that his personal life nearly didn't exist at all. ...
