Testing My Limits Part 1

According to my watch, it was exactly 10:07 when I turned into the long, curving drive to Kim's house. I'd promised to have her at her lawyers by 11:00 and she told me she'd be ready by 10:15. I walked up and rang the bell. Not getting an answer, I rang it again and banged on the door with my keys. When she still didn't come to the door, I fumbled around under the porch swing to find the key she kept hidden there.

I strange chill moved over me as I opened her door, almost a feeling of foreboding. One of the first things I noticed was that the house was dark and silent, almost eerily so. I moved through the living room, calling her name several times but getting no reply. As I approached her bedroom, a narrow band of light could be seen coming from under her door, but no sound at all.

I pushed open the door, calling out to her. "Hey, sleepyhead, get your butt out of bed. You wanted to leave here by 10:30." The silence alone was ominous enough, but when I saw her sprawled face down on the bed, a bolt of fear ripped through me. The sheets and blanket were wrapped around her in a tangled mess. Her body lay angled across the bed as though she hadn't intended to go to bed at all, with one arm bent over her head and the other and on the pillow next to her face.
