After a big homemade brunch, Arturo and I decided to go out and get some real exercise in what was left of Saturday. We went running in the park, and then paid a brief visit to the health club near our office. We both already belonged to it, having taken advantage of a discount through our employer.

Arturo was right; it was fun to have a workout buddy. In real life he worked out in a tank top, but he was still fun to watch. We didn't bother with the pool afterward, though. It would be too much of a letdown, we agreed; we couldn't splash and wrestle in it the way we'd been able to in our private pool in the secret room in our apartment. Besides, here we'd need bathing suits. So we just showered and headed home. I noticed that his body looked just the way it did in my dreams.

Late that night, I had my first nightmare in a long while. Instead of the usual black-and-white starry desert dream, I found myself in a long narrow cavern whose walls were honeycombed with six-sided cubbyholes, each of which held a writhing little horror, sort of like a giant maggot, twice as large as a rat, with black eyes and waving antennas.

I woke up with a start. Arturo was holding me down, keeping me from leaping out of bed. "It's okay," he said soothingly. ...
