THE PARK (Part One)

My name's Barry. At the time these events happened I was only about twenty three and a normal, if slightly tragic guy. The month before my girlfriend had callously dumped me (callous meaning, got herself well into another relationship before cutting me loose). With her actually went most of my friends who had wittingly or unwittingly helped her little plan along. I couldn't face any of them so I withdrew and kept to myself.

That night I went to the cinema to watch some blockbuster or other. I don't really remember what it was, which is hardly surprising considering the events that eclipsed it later. On my way home I decided to take a diversion through Ignius Park, seeing a bunch of rowdy drunks up ahead. I wasn't the beefiest meanest son of a bitches in any case. Better to draw wide cresents around them.

About halfway through the park I heard them. It wasn't a clear noise, just a kind of a ruffle in the undergrowth to my left. I froze to the spot wondering if it was the drunks cutting me off. Am I giving them too much credit? I wondered to myself, It's probably a squirrel or something.
