Canyon of dreams

Driving down a long country road in Virginia I went around a long bend and realized that I was in the canyon of my dreams. It was all there, the high cliffs, the bridge spanning the gorge and the group of unidentified buildings at the base with the highway passing in front of them.

I was not sure if I was still dreaming and would wake up in a cold sweat the way I had so many nights. As I got closer, the first of the buildings was the typical country gas station and general store, after that, what looked to be a run down hotel and a diner.

I was so curious I decided to stop and have a bite to eat, having been on the road for several hours already. When I entered the diner, the only people I saw were the overweight cook, one very old waitress and a couple of locals sitting at the counter.

I sat down at the counter a few seats down from the two locals and ordered a coke, hamburger and fries. I was not expecting a gourmet feast just based on the looks of the place, but was pleasantly surprised when a thick juicy burger and golden crisp fries was placed in front of me.

As I dug into my meal, I could not help but notice I was being looked at ...
