I was travelling to London recently for a business the following day. I boarded the train at Liverpool, and settled at a seat with a table next to a window. The train was filling up, and a couple in their mid forties joined me at the table.

The woman sat next to me, explaining that she didn't like travelling backwards. I offered my seat to her husband, but he declined saying that they would probably play cards on the journey and it was better if he sat opposite.

Shortly into the journey, the man took out the cards, and asked if I wanted to play. I declined as i was reading. The couple were friendly, and were chatting to me on the way. Nothing of any importance, but general chit-chat but they introduced themselves as Linda and Pete. I decided that I wanted a beer, and seeing as the woman had to let me past her to get out, I thought it only courteous for me to ask the couple if I could get them anything. They gratefully accepted my offer, and asked for a red wine each.

As I returned from the buffet car, the woman was on her mobile phone engaged in a heated conversation. I only caught the end of the conversation but she said "well where the hell are we meant to stay now". The conversation was intriguing, but I didn't want to pry, so looked out of the window and tried to ignore it. Anyway, Pete brought me into the conversation, explaining that they were heading to London ...
