Valerie Martin was 8 years old when she first met him. Her mother and father were foster parents to a number of children over the years. Some stayed with them for a month or so and some for years. She was accustomed to having these strangers in her life.

DJ was 16. His name was Dexter James, but he hated the name Dexter. He had had a troubled childhood. His never knew his father and his mother was a drug addict. He was raised until the age of 10 by his grandmother. She became very sick and passed away. Since then he moved from foster home to foster home. He was a bit of a trouble maker and had a few brushes with the law over minor misdemeanors. He was not a good student and very moody.

Valerie's parents were a bit aprehensive about taking DJ in their care, but her mother had a big heart and couldn't resist this boy with the curly, dark hair.

DJ had never been in a foster home like this before. There were 8 children altogether. Five biological and three foster kids. He found that the Martin's had a very loving relationship with all of them and did not show favortism towards their real children. All of them shared in the work around the house equally. Their jobs consisted of housework, laundry, cleaning dishes, and yard work. They rotated jobs every month.
